The Eight Great UK Technologies     The UK last year set out a clear and ambitious 10 year technology plan (to 2023) for developing World Leading Technology Centres.  There are three highlights to look for in this wide-ranging address.  The first is the contrast between the UK and the US, the second is the discussion of the Eight Great Technologies that will be the primary focus of the UK's technology advancement programmes, and, finally, and perhaps most interestingly for a political address, is the acknowledgement and discussion of the six possible outcomes of this 10 year plan, everything from fizzle (false dawn) to fantastic (home to world class R&D centres).

The Eight Great Technologies (the UK's Focus)
1. Big Data
2. Space
3. Robotics and Autonomous Systems
4. Synthetic Biology
5. Regenerative Medicine
6. Agri-Science
7. Advanced Materials
8. Energy

The Six Possible Outcomes:
1. False Dawn
2. Transmutation
3. Gone abroad
4. It's here but it isn't ours
5. We have grown big new companies
6. We are purveyors of R&D to the world
